Canvas

Dutch Master 17th century

Isabella de Bourbon, copy after a painting by Rubens from 1628/29.

Possibly after the painting now in Vienna in the Kunsthistorisches Museum.

The same portrait is in the possession of the Earl of Spencer in Althorp Castle, Northamptonshire, England. (Country Life, 15/6 1921)

Isabella was the first wife of Philip IV of Spain. She is depicted here wearing a heavy dress adorned with a great quantity of pearls. Her hair and ears are also adorned with pearls, and she is wearing a very fine millstone collar, very much in fashion at the time.

According to the custom of the Golden Baroque Age she is depicted in front of a heavy curtain, with many fanciful folds.

This canvas was found by van Heek together with the canvas of Philip IV, both rolled on a stick and placed in the archives of Castle Bergh.
