Benson, Ambrosius (ca.1495-1550) Belgium, Bruges

Portrait of Vigoureux de Courtville ca. 1540.

Nobleman from Bruges depicted in this sixteenth century portrait has been identified as Vigoureux de Courtville, a nobleman from Bruges. He has two striking attributes: the ring he wears on his forefinger, and the ring he is holding up. Both may be symbols of authority, more specifically of delegated authority, and may refer to the man’s profession of ambassador. Moreover, the jewellery could possibly be associated with the family coat of arms, which is depicted in the upper left corner and seems to have rings on it. In his left hand, Vigoureux de Courtville seems to be holding a pair of gloves. He is wearing a typically sixteenth century hat.
